Spent Day of Rest on Thursday, Recovery Progressing
Pope Francis is doing well and is alert, according to a statement released by the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni.
The 86-year-old pontiff spent a day of rest on Thursday, and his recovery is progressing well, Bruni said.
Francis was admitted to Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic on Sunday for scheduled intestinal surgery. The three-hour operation was successful, and Francis has been recovering in the hospital since then.
On Wednesday, Francis was able to get out of bed and take a few steps, Bruni said. He also met with his doctors and staff, and he continued to work on his official duties.
Francis is expected to remain in the hospital for several more days before being released.
